Versatta kilts come in nine sizes, from XXS to 4X, with an adjustable waist that fits a range of measurements. Here's how to measure yourself, read our size charts, and convert from your usual US pants size.
First: your pant size is not your waist measurement
This trips up a lot of first-time buyers. In the US, pants are labeled by a nominal size — a “32” waist” pant often fits a 34” or 35” actual waist, depending on the brand. Clothing manufacturers don’t agree on a standard, and the number on your waistband has drifted further from reality over the years.
For a kilt, you need your actual waist measurement in inches. Use the Pants (US) column in the charts below as a starting point — then verify with a tape measure before you order.
How to measure for a kilt
Wrap a soft measuring tape around your body at the point where you plan to wear the kilt. If you’ve never worn a kilt before, assume you’ll wear it at about the same place you wear jeans. Keep the tape snug but not pulled tight.
Write that number down. That’s what you’re sizing from.

Micro, Mini, and Knee-Length Kilts (12”, 15”, 19”)
These kilts feature a tapered waist that accommodates a waist-to-hip differential of 7–13”. Both your waist and hip measurements matter here.
Start with your waist measurement to find your size. Then check the Hip column: if your hips fall within that range, you’re set. If your hips are larger than the range for your waist size, go with the smallest size whose Hip range will fit you — the tapered waist will accommodate the difference.
For example: if your waist is 36” (Small) but your hips are 48”, the Small hip range (41”–47”) won’t accommodate you. The Medium hip range (45”–51”) will — so order a Medium.

The adjustable waist
Every Versatta kilt* features a wide hook-and-loop waistband with a continuously adjustable waist — you’re not locked into a single measurement. If you fluctuate a few inches across the day or across the year, the kilt adjusts with you.
This is why getting into the right size range matters more than hitting an exact number. The adjustable waist handles the fine-tuning.
*Except the Taranis and Gladiator leather kilts, which use a buckle system.
A note on fit: Versatta sizing runs generous
If you’re used to buying clothing in a Large, there’s a good chance you’re a Medium in a Versatta kilt. Our sizing is generous by design — the adjustable waist covers a wide range, and many customers find themselves a full size down from what they’d expect.
This is worth knowing before you default to your usual size.
What too big and too small actually look like
Too big: The front apron starts to wrap around toward the pocket on the side. If the apron is covering your pocket, the kilt is too large.
Too small: There may not be enough hook-and-loop overlap to secure the waistband properly — or the apron won’t cover quite enough when you’re sitting or moving.
Both are fixable with an exchange, but knowing the signs helps you evaluate fit when your kilt arrives.
On the boundary between sizes
If your measurement falls right at the overlap between two sizes, the right call depends on where you're headed. If you're getting smaller, go with the smaller size — the kilt will fit better as you progress, and the adjustable waist gives you room to work with now. If you're getting bigger, go with the larger size, for the same reason. And if you're staying steady, go with the larger size in most cases: the generous fit of a Versatta kilt means the smaller size may feel tighter than expected, while the larger size gives you the full range of the adjustable waist to dial in exactly where you want it.
What size kilt belt do I need?
For kilt belts, go up one size from your kilt. If you’re a Medium kilt, order a Large belt.
