What Is a Cargo Kilt?
If you've spent any time around the kilt community, you've probably heard the term "cargo kilt" thrown around. But if you're new to kilts — or just new to this particular style — you might be wondering what sets a cargo kilt apart from any other kilt. The answer is simpler than you'd think, and the upgrade is bigger than you'd expect.A Kilt, But Make It FunctionalA traditional kilt is an unbifurcated garment worn at the waist, featuring pleats at the back and a flat front panel. It wraps around the body and fastens at the hip — and for centuries, that was more or less the whole story.A cargo kilt takes that foundation and adds hip pockets. That's it. That's the upgrade. Those pockets change everything. Suddenly you have carrying capacity. You can bring your phone, your keys, your wallet, and whatever else you'd normally stuff into pants pockets — without wearing pants. The kilt stays a kilt. It just becomes a kilt you can actually live in.What Makes a Good Cargo KiltNot all cargo kilts are built the same. Here's what to look for:Carrying capacity. The whole point of a cargo kilt is that you don't have to leave your stuff behind. Good cargo pockets sit at the hip, stay out of the way when you move, and hold a realistic amount of gear without pulling the kilt out of shape.A secure waistband. Cargo kilts carry more weight than a traditional kilt, so the waistband matters more. Look for a wide hook-and-loop strip or buckle system that distributes the load evenly and lets you dial in the fit precisely.Durable fabric. Canvas and poly-cotton blends hold up best for everyday wear. They maintain their structure over time, stand up to washing, and don't lose their shape after a few months of regular use.Length options. Most brands offer a single standard length — around 23". Some offer a mini. Versatta is the only brand offering all five: micro (12"), mini (15"), knee-length (19"), standard (23"), and big & tall (25"). The right length depends on what you're doing and how you like to wear them — there's no wrong answer, just preference.Who Wears Cargo Kilts? The short answer: anyone who's tired of pants. The slightly longer answer: cargo kilts have found a home with people across a wide range of lifestyles. Festival-goers wear them for the comfort and freedom of movement. Tradespeople wear them because kilts breathe better than work pants in the heat. People at conventions, Renaissance fairs, and events wear them because they're practical and they look great. Everyday wearers — people who just want an alternative to denim — wear them because once you go kilt, going back to pants feels like a punishment. The pockets make all of these use cases more practical. You're not giving anything up. You're gaining something.Cargo Kilts vs. Traditional KiltsTraditional kilts are built around a specific aesthetic — tartan wool, knife pleats, a very particular silhouette. They're beautiful, and they have their place. But they're not designed for the hardware store or the hiking trail or the all-day festival.Cargo kilts occupy a different space. They're the modern kilt — designed for how people actually live, not for a ceremonial context. The materials are more durable, the fit is more adjustable, and the pockets mean you're not hunting for somewhere to put your phone every time you stand up.That said, the two aren't mutually exclusive. Plenty of people own both. One More Thing About VersattaMost cargo kilt brands bolt the pockets on and call it done. Versatta's pockets are detachable and interchangeable — swap in solid cargo pockets, tartan pockets, leather pockets, or icon pockets depending on the occasion. You can go pocket-free entirely when the situation calls for it. It's a small thing until you actually use it, and then it's not small at all.Shop cargo kilts →
Learn moreOne year of Versatta!
Hi! This is J.T., coming to you after ONE YEAR of running Versatta Kilts! 2025 has been full of ups and downs, and it certainly was a challenging year to take on a brand with as much gravitas as Versatta. One of the focuses of the year has been to build my team. Versatta, having its roots in Virginia and sharing its staff with Verillas, required a new team of people to keep us growing and building once we moved to California. You’ve met a few of the team already through our new YouTube series, Fireside Dram with J.T. – if you haven’t checked that out yet, please do (and give us a like, subscribe, and a share maybe?). Sid and Mikee make up the core of our working group and without them Versatta would be a much different place. The big project of the year was the launch of our new website. Thankfully, the rebuild gave us access to a lot of features we had been looking for and has allowed us to expand the number of kilts we can offer. We’ve spent the last few months making major improvements and minor tweaks to the front and back ends, and we’re still bringing on new features. One of my favorite achievements of the new site was being able to start our featured artisan section. After years on the Ren Faire and Highland Game circuit, I am so happy we were able to introduce the Versatta community to our friends at Krakenwhip and Mythica Metalworks. I’m hoping to expand our product offerings from these brands (and others!) as we grow through the years. But the true crown of the year is the creation of the Made-to-Order program. In my decade as a retail partner for Verillas/Versatta, I always wanted to be able to order colorways and combinations that weren’t necessarily viable on a large-order scale. I’ve spent the year working with one of our manufacturers to develop and implement the ability to create almost any color of kilt that we have the material available for. We’re quoting 90-120 days for delivery, but we’re working hard to keep that time as short as possible. As of this writing, a shipment of kilts is winging its way through Customs that contains MTO orders from Black Friday! It isn’t all of them, and we won’t always be able to be that fast, but we’re doing our best. Over the next few days/weeks/months, we’ll be bringing more and more listings on line for different styles in a wealth of colors – solids, hybrids, half kilts, and more. We’re working on being able to offer multicolor hybrids, and hope to be launching bi-color hybrids (where the outside color is something other than black) in the very near future. I’m hopeful that Versatta can have a great 2026. Thank you for making our first year truly special. I'm personally very grateful for the ways our community has shown up for us, and look forward to more exciting things to come. Happy Holidays and a Wonderful New Year, J.T.

Hello Vanguards! Welcome to the newly re-built home of Versatta Kilts. We're here with the goal of making your every day epic. The eagle-eyed among you may have noticed that we've changed the website...just a little. The most noticeable change is that we've moved to Shopify. The Shopify platform is better suited for operations of our size. Through ShopPay and the Shop network we've opened up new convenient ways to find us and to complete your purchase. Shopify also gives us access to a wide range of new technology. We're happy to be able to offer Loop returns and exchanges, simplifying and streamlining the process. We're also offering a new customer appreciation loyalty program, giving you the opportunity to earn discounts on future kilts. One of the ways you'll be able to earn points is by participating in our new reviews program. Adding photos or video will get you even more points, and we might end up featuring you on the site! But the biggest part of the new site is our ability to handle special orders on out-of-stock options. For much of our catalog: if we can make the kilt (we have the colors or tartans in stock at the factory), you can order it. We've got the basics set up now, but we'll add more colors as time goes on. If you've always wanted a hybrid in a length we've never offered it, or have been waiting for a color to come back in stock, chances are you can now order it! For the styles that can't be made on demand, you'll be able to let us know that you're waiting for it to come back in stock utilizing the "Notify Me" button that will be on the product page. This will give us an idea of what to focus our specialty production on and will make sure you know when the kilt you've been waiting for is available.Needless to say, this project has taken a lot of our focus and energy over the last few months, but it's not all we've been working on! Look for announcements soon about some of our other projects, including a couple new kilt designs. We hope you enjoy the new website.

Learn moreHello from the new guy
Hello Kilt Enthusiasts of the World, My name is J.T. Centonze and as of the new year, I am the new owner of Versatta Kilts. To some of you, my name or face will be familiar, as I have been vending Versatta Kilts up and down the west coast (and in Hawaii) for over a decade now. If you have bought a Versatta or Verillas kilt in person at a renaissance faire or Scottish games in California, Oregon, Washington State, or Hawaii in the last decade, odds are very good you have already met me, and are familiar with my other company, Off Kilter Kilts. In my capacity as a kilt reseller, I have developed a longstanding relationship with both Verillas and Alice. In fact, I am Versatta's biggest customer and have been for years. I have purchased more Versatta kilts than anyone else on the planet. The quality and integrity of the brand is of utmost importance to me, and I am unwilling to make sacrifices on either point. This is why I purchased Versatta: I specifically wanted to make sure that the brand would retain its reputation. To augment that reputation, I bring with me my background as a successful small business owner and my expertise as an accountant, not to mention the gravitas that going grey at a very early age has lent me. I intend to streamline the customer experience, and to grow the brand in new and exciting areas. Please do stay tuned in to our various socials (we’ll start posting on Bluesky soon, I swear!) as well as our website, as I will be doing my best to keep you informed about changes as we make them. I recognize the optics of a company like Versatta moving from the hands of a youthful trans woman to someone who looks like he’s permanently doing a Doc Brown cosplay. I promise, Alice and I are only a couple years apart. Further, as a cishet White man I am aware of the privilege afforded me as I move through the world, and the blind spots I have as a result of said privilege. This is why I intend to keep marginalized voices in close proximity to me, so that this company can continue to serve the communities that have come to rely on it. Alice will continue to be involved with Versatta, in ways which suit her talents and her interests. I am grateful to her for the work she has done and the brand she created, and to her team in Virginia for all their work making the brand what it is and especially for the work they did in helping with the transfer. Versatta will now be headquartered in Santa Clarita, CA, right next door to one of the largest garment districts in the world, which I hope will enable Versatta to go in some very fun new directions. I am looking forward to exploring what we can do with Versatta, and I promise not to let go of what already makes the brand so special now. I never imagined when I started selling kilts that I would someday helm a company like Versatta. Thank you for being supporters of this wonderful brand, and I hope you’ll join me as Versatta enters this new chapter. A hearty thank you from The Big Guy In The Kilt, J.T. Centonze

Welcome to Versatta Kilts, a streamlined kilt buying experience brought to you by our parent company Verillas. Right now, Versatta is still under construction in many ways, but we wanted our long standing Verillas fam to be able to follow along as we refine and improve the kilts and customer service experience they’ve come to know and love since our founding in 2013. If you’re new to the kilt wearing and buying experience, welcome! We cannot wait to show you all the exciting new changes that will be happening over the next few months. Why the split and new name? Verillas has spent the past 10+ years providing fashion for the goth, alternative, and LGBTQ+ communities, but as our ambition and warehouse have grown, so has our audience. Now we have customers that are looking for a more focused experience where they can get alerts about sales and new releases that pertain to their specific interests rather than everything offered on the Verillas website. What does this mean for the actual purchasing experience? Not as many changes as you’d think. You’ll still click on the “Kilt” tab on the Verillas website, but before the end of the year you can expect to be redirected to this new website, VersattaKilts.com when purchasing a kilt. Customers will also notice new Versatta branding rolling out slowly, starting with a change to the sew in tags and paper retail tags on all kilts. In short, from packaging to the final product, Versatta will become the new face of all Verillas kilt designs. We are so grateful to all of our long standing customers and supporters for being with us thus far, and we cannot wait to show all the newcomers what we and your future kilts will be made of. Here’s to an amazing new start!
