Why Kilts?

We get asked this question a lot. Or something similar, like "What is a kilt?" or "Why Versatta Kilts?" We're going to answer these questions for you, and hopefully a few others.

What is a kilt?

A kilt is an unbifurcated garment that is worn at or about the waist, featuring pleats and usually displaying a flat front panel. In the modern era, a kilt usually wraps around the body and is fixed at the waist by snaps, buckles, or hook & loop strips (commonly referred to as "velcro"). Kilts can vary in length, with it being most common that a kilt stops at the knee, though longer and shorter kilts are both possible and accepted.

In the Scottish tradition, a kilt was a long piece of woven wool, 9-ish yards long and 1-2 yards wide, attached with a belt. The great kilt, as it is now known, was often worn in such a way that allowed it to double as a cloak. Eventually even the Scots realized that a garment you had to create each time you put it on was a bit of a bother, and the philabeg (or "walking kilt") was born - it is from this garment that the modern kilt traces its roots.

Of course, while wool tartan and the term 'kilt' are of Scottish derivation, the unbifurcated garment has been a mainstay of fashion much longer than that. Is a kilt a skirt? Sure, in the same way that a polo, a t-shirt, a halter and a tank are all shirts. Part of wearing a kilt is not being concerned with the judgement of people stuck in the past.

What is a kilt made of?

Kilts can be made of pretty much any garment fabric, though even that isn't necessarily a requirement. Many people associate kilts with tartan, a type of woven wool plaid that is often linked with a Scottish clan. Today, though, you can get kilts in a variety of materials: cotton (canvas or denim), poly, leather, velvet, wool, chainmail, linen - if a fabric can hold a pleat, chances are someone has made it into a kilt.

Why Kilts?

Admittedly, we're biased, but aren't pants just the worst? Why would you want to stuff your legs into hot, stuffy, torturous prisons day after day? Kilts allow for greater freedom of movement, are better at regulating temperature, and quite frankly are the far more stylish choice. A kilt says "I am not bound by the expectations of society, and I am not limited by the tyranny of pants".
